Every Other Day Diet – Jon Benson

When I first came across “The Every Other Day Diet” (also known as EODD), I was a bit wary as it seemed to unconventional.  But, then thinking about how the ‘unconventional’ rarely seems to work, I thought I would take a deeper look.

When I read that you are encouraged to eat what you want every other day, I just couldn’t see how it could work but, because Jon Benson is so respected in the field of weight-loss and is himself a self-confessed former fat guy with numerous diet and fitness related books under his belt so I knew this was something I was definitely going to give a go.

If you haven’t heard of this diet before, you can learn more about it by Clicking Here to visit the official website.

What Is The Every Other Day Diet All About?

It didn’t take too long to figure out.  He calls it ‘interval eating’ and ‘planned variance’ which is basically caloric cycling; a way in which you can trick your body into thinking that calories are not being restricted even though they are.  This is necessary so that the body does not begin to slow it’s metabolic rate which makes it harder to continue to lose weight.

The EODD Diet Idea

Broken into two parts as the title suggests, there are “burn days” and “feed days”.  During the burn days, you only eat between 30% to 50% of your maintenance caloric intake but during the feed days, you consume up to 150% of your maintenance caloric intake (eating the foods that you like on these days as long as you control your portion sizes).

EODD – Eat Whatever I Want?

mmm…not necessarily!

There are three different ways you can follow on the Every Other Day Diet:

  1. Primer – This is the most flexible of the three programs and does allow you to essentially eat whatever you want every other day.
  2. Lifestyle – The maintenance program, recommended after the initial primer phase.  There are only two “feed days” here, meaning that you can only eat whatever you want for these two days.
  3. Extreme – The most strict of the three plans, designed for athletes and bodybuilders.

The “primer” is the only program that you can eat whatever you want every other day.  Jon recommends that you begin with this program, and progress to the “lifestyle” program which only allows two weekly days where you can eat any types of food.

Will “The Every Other Day Diet” Work for Me?

Jon makes it very clear that there are “three conditions” that you have to “take to heart” in order to succeed with this program.

Those conditions are:

  1. Dedication – Weight loss is like most other things in life.  In order to succeed, there needs to be a certain level of dedication.  Like any diet, the EODD will not work if you are not dedicated!
  2. Exercise – Any weight loss program that says you do not have to exercise is a scam.  The EODD requires you to perform some form of exercise regularly.  Fair enough!
  3. Be Reasonable – Having unrealistic expectations is a no no.  It’s taken you years and years to accumulate this excess weight, so don’t expect to lose it all in two weeks!

Like any proper diet program, you need to actually focus on your goal and make a decent effort, but if you are willing to follow this simple system, you will undoubtedly do well.

Extra notes:

  • There is a year of weekly support newsletters.
  • It really is perfect for the busy executive, housewife or college student.
  • Doctor-approved nutrition system.
  • High quality bonuses included

I have been following this plan personally and, on average, am losing around 2lbs of fat per week. I am professionally measured and am ensuring that I lose fat and not muscle which can happen on some plans. I am on a 50 day challenge with Tom Venuto’s (from Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle) inner circle club but using the EODD plan for the actual eating program as I find it suits me better. I think it is very important that you find what suits you as you are more likely to stick to it long term. Once I finish my challenge, I will be putting my journal on this site.

There are 3 different eating plans based around the same concept on the EODD plan. The choice you make depends on how quickly you want results and/or how much weight you need to lose. The basic, easiest program allows you to do what it says; ie, every second day you have a time period where you can basically eat what you want (this is not all day but a time period during the day). Of course, sensibility needs to be prime here. You can not expect to lose weight at a reasonable pace if you use your time to gorge yourself silly but if you use this time to enjoy your favorite foods, or a relaxed lunch with friends then there is no need to think you’ve “blown it”. Weekends are generally more relaxed also with more freedom allowed. The idea behind this program really is that calories are restricted one or more days and increased on another so your body does not drop it’s metabolic rate. The most strict form of this diet restricts the overall week’s calories more by reducing the number of days you can feast and what you can feast on – but of course, the choice is entirely yours and I personally have found that cycling between the program is great for me. Some weeks I can be very strict, and others I just have that ‘need’ for more comfort food. It has taught me though how to deal with difficult weeks and not fall off the program just because I ate cake or enjoyed myself too much at a party.

The program is based on what he calls five feeds per day the ‘SNAPP’ system. SNAPP stands for Shake, Nuts, Apples, Protein, Produce. There are menus for the Shakes and Protein ie Breakfast and Dinner but don’t fret if you don’t like the sound of shakes for breakfast or nuts & apples for snacks, he provides alternative menus and snacks. There is no calorie counting on this plan and the amount of food you eat is based upon your current weight but Jon gives you a very easy system to work it out. You also receive regular e-mails and free access to his members support forum so you can ask questions, share recipes and get support the whole way. Currently, Jon is running a promotion where, if you purchase the Every Other Day Diet, you get his 7 Minute Muscle program at 77% off the original price. I’m not sure how long he is running the promotion for but am pretty sure it’s still available at this time. This is where you will find great exercises that you can do either at home (like I do) or in the gym. You can view these online as well as see them in the book. Jon has devised a way of exercising that reduces the time spent ‘working out’ but getting just as good results as those guys who practically live in the gym. I swear by it.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.
